Residential Services
Deputy Juvenile Officers (DJOs) and staff assigned to the residential services unit provide supervision for youth either presented or ordered to
secure detention or committed to the Buchanan County Academy (BCA).
Staff coordinate appropriate services for youth.
DJOs and staff assigned to BCA utilize the TruThought corrective thinking curriculum. This evidence-based program educates youth about tactics that support negative lifestyles, teaches youth about thinking barriers, and provides education about responding responsibly. Staff ensure youth have access to appropriate educational, medical, mental health, and substance abuse services.
Staff assigned to the assessment/detention center are responsible for the oversight and care of youth presented to or committed to the detention center. Staff are responsible for completing an evidence-based assessment to assist the DJO in determining whether a youth should be detained, communicating with a DJO to ensure the DJO has complete information before making a decision to hold or release a youth, communicating with a youth’s parent/guardian to ensure the parent/guardian knows the status of his/her child, and serving youth and/or parent/guardian with court filings.
