Community Engagement
Staff assigned to the community engagement unit are responsible for the coordination of victim services and the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program. Staff are responsible for sending a notification packet to victims of pending juvenile court cases, tracking responses received from victims, assuring that legal counsel for the juvenile office receives the victim response, attending court hearings, sending outcome letters to those victims who request notification,
and tracking restitution payments.
Staff also coordinate various programs including the Community Justice Committee, victim awareness, community service projects, smoking/vaping cessation program, and apology letter assistance.

Meeting the needs of the victims in cases shall be a vital concern for all court personnel. Every courtesy shall be extended to victims in regards to prompt notification, professional interactions and courteous and empathetic service.

Apology Letter Assistance
Assists juveniles in writing an apology letter to the victims by providing education about the components of an apology letter and provides assistance with proofreading as needed.

Community Service Projects
Our office supervises juveniles who are ordered to provide community service as part of their probation requirements. These include volunteering at the local food kitchen, assisting with Second Harvest donation programs, ringing the bell during the holiday season for Salvation Army and other community events.

A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer is a trained citizen who is appointed by a judge to serve as a voice for the child in court so the Juvenile Court Judge knows what the child wants. In the 5th Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri (Buchanan and Andrew counties) these children are victims of abuse and/or neglect.

Restitution Tracking
Restitution payments for Buchanan County cases can be made at the Buchanan County Circuit Clerk’s Office or online. To pay online you will need your case number. If you do not know your case number please contact your DJO or the Clerk's Office to obtain it.

Victim Awareness Group (VAG)
An educational group that promotes victim awareness and accountability. Juveniles ranging from age 11-16 that have committed misdemeanor offenses in which a primary victim has been identified (examples: assault, property damage, stealing, trespassing) take a victim awareness test, acknowledge victims involved in the offenses (both primary and secondary) and learn about the ripple effect of crime. Different aspects of being a victim (financial, physical, and emotional) are discussed along with decision-making skills, coping strategies, and accountability.
